Frank Lampard is reluctant to use Wednesday’s clash with Liverpool as an excuse for our shortcomings today, but appeared to acknowledge that it was a contributing factor.
Chelsea’s Super Cup clash with Liverpool went the distance on Wednesday evening. 120 minutes of football followed by a penalty shootout and a subsequent defeat. It will have been hard for the players to bounce back so soon from a gruelling affair.
Unfortunately, there’s no rest for the wicked. Chelsea had to pick themselves up to come again against Leicester City today, and despite a fiery start from the Blues, were unable to get the result that we all wanted to see in Lamps’ return.
Of course, the dip in performance in the second period will have had a part to play in that. Every player that started the game was involved on Wednesday. While Lampard acknowledges that, he refuses to use it as an excuse for not winning.
Lampard on playing 120 mins in midweek: "I feel for the players a bit on that one but I don't want to use it as an overriding excuse." #CFC #CHELEI

Lampard is never going to come out and make excuses because he is well aware that they will be you nowhere at this club. If you want to be a success here, you have to deliver the results.
