“Football is forever” – Chelsea goalkeeper reveals why he cannot retire

Willy Caballero is very much in the shadows at Chelsea, providing backup to one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Kepa Arrizabalaga.

But Chelsea fans hold an affection for the former Manchester City player.

Whenever the Argentine has been called on, he has been ever reliable. And it’s so important to have a top class backup keeper, it provides key core foundations at any club.

So Caballero is very much valued by the Chelsea supporters, players, and the coaching staff. He is fully trusted to come in if needed.

But Blues fans love him for other reasons as well, his love for the game and the passion that he plays with.

You can see how much he loves what he does every time he pulls on that shirt, whether it’s a training shirt, or a match day shirt, you know he’s always giving his entire effort.

The 37-year old has been talking about his love of the game, and the possibility of having to retire one day, in an interview with Enganche.

He said:

“Football is forever. Here at Chelsea, at a table in my house, in a bar and anywhere else. To meet with friends who are also players to watch football and analyse it still draws me to it.”

“I live for football and consume it whenever I can. My daughters won’t let me retire.

“Many times I joke at home that this will be my last year, and they tell me that I won’t be able to live without it. I need to play it, watch it on TV or know what’s going on.

“It’s what I like, to analyse and see what we did well and what we did wrong.

“I came to Chelsea because I love what I do.

“I don’t know how to do anything else that isn’t training and playing football. Being here, even if I don’t get to play, I push on and I try to achieve my best form to be able to contribute in my own way.

“Sometimes a team needs you more off the pitch than on, and you are just as important.”
