“It’s a cup that the club desperately wants to win” Chelsea boss delivers rallying cry

Chelsea face Liverpool on Wednesday evening in the UEFA Super Cup, and it’s a competition that Frank Lampard is eager to win.

The competition sees the winners of the Champions League match up against the winners of the Europa League, and it just so happens to be two of England’s top teams.

The timing is off, with the Premier League opening weekend already over, and Chelsea having only played on Sunday.

It’s perhaps a fixture that both clubs would have liked to have avoided at this stage, or perhaps played it during pre-season.

However, as frustrating as it is for the teams to make the trip to Turkey midway through the first week of the Premier League, Lampard has declared that Chelsea are desperate to win it.

The Blues will be looking to bounce right back from Sunday’s season opener, where they lost 4-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

As reported by The Independent, Lampard said:

“We need to be absolutely ready.

“It’s a cup that the club desperately wants to win. I’ve never won it, a lot of players in there have never won it, so we have to give it everything.

“Every player in there needs to be aware of the importance of the game to this club and we have to give everything, because it’s going to be tough.

“It’s going to be tough, but we cannot walk off the pitch and think, ‘Oh, we could’ve done that’ or ‘We missed that opportunity’ or ‘We weren’t quite ready’ or make any excuses for ourselves.”
