This Chelsea flop signing claims he improved in England

It was confirmed yesterday that Davide Zappacosta had joined Roma on loan, as reported by sources like the BBC.

The right wing back arrived on deadline day under Antonio Conte as a backup wing back to Victor Moses, but he was never able to make the position his own.

In fact, with the exception of a couple of runs when the Nigerian was out, and some relief work last season helping out Cesar Azpilicueta at right back, the former Torino man was never able to establish himself as first choice.

Despite that, in quotes carried by Goal.com, the now Roma man has explained that he thinks he actually improved in his time in England, mainly spent riding the bench.

“I think I developed a lot as a person over the past two years in England,” Zappa said.

“I’ve become a stronger character because I had to get to grips with a different place, a different culture, a different language and a different lifestyle. It certainly wasn’t easy, but it was a very positive experience that allowed me to develop both as a person and a player,” he went on.

Certainly he never impressed much on the pitch – his finest hour turned out to be his debut, where his overhit cross ended up finding the net. But we’re glad to hear it was a learning experience for him, and we wish him all the best back in his home country.
