Rewind (2004): Chelsea strike £24M deal with Marseille to sign Didier Drogba

It’s rewind time! The date is July 19th 2004, 15 years ago. Chelsea have been heavily linked with a combative Ivorian forward playing in France – named Didier Drogba.

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Ligue 1 giants Marseille to sign striker Didier Drogba, according to a report published today by the Guardian.

Drogba found the back of the net 32 times in 55 appearances in all competitions last term, earning him a move as part of Jose Mourinho’s revolution at Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old, known for his brute strength and clinical finishing ability, has cost Chelsea a fee in the region of £24M, according to information provided by the Guardian.

That stands as a new club record, one which will likely be broken sooner rather than later, with Roman Abramovich bankrolling wholesale changes to Chelsea’s squad.

Drogba will be partnered with striker counterpart Mateja Kežman, who scored 66 goals in his final two Eredivisie seasons as a PSV Eindhoven player.

It’s safe to say that Chelsea have been smart in recruiting natural goal-scorers to build a new look attack. Mourinho’s men will have no problem finding the net next term.

And the rest is history…
