Frank Lampard explains the two ways Ruben Loftus-Cheek can be used in his teams

Everyone is so excited about what’s going on in Chelsea’s preseason training, but there’s so little coming out of that secret camp (apart from photos), that they’ve taken to digging up old interviews for snippets of Frank Lampard quotes about his current players.

That’s what Football.London did for example, finding this Frank-written BBC Sport article ahead of the World Cup last summer.

There you will see Frank musing over the position of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and explaining that despite him having been used as an attacking midfielder,  he can also play deeper. We ended up seeing evidence of that last season in fact, and Frank will be even more convinced now that the England star can be used as a proper number 8 – much like Lampard himself.

“Ruben is often used as an advanced midfielder, but he is neat and tidy enough on the ball to play as a link-man deeper in midfield,” the Chelsea hero wrote.

He also went on at length about the 23 year old’s work ethic, which he saw first hand when they were in squads together:

“When he linked up with the Chelsea first team as a kid, Ruben was very quiet and always very respectful. His attitude and work ethic was first class, which I love to see.”

He’s got all the tools, we already know, and now he has the manager to make the most of them. No wonder we’re all so excited.
