Former Chelsea striker lands himself in hot water over betting scandal

Former Chelsea and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has been banned from playing football for 6 weeks after breaching FA gambling regulations, reports Sky Sports.

The 29-year old free agent has also been fined £75,000.

Sky Sports say that Sturridge instructed his brother Leon to place a bet on him making a transfer move from Liverpool to La Liga side Sevilla.

The report found that, in issuing his brother the instruction, Sturridge had provided him with inside information for that purpose, therefore breaching FA rules.

According to Sky Sports, an independent panel had received more than 3,500 pieces of evidence, including some WhatsApp conversations involving Sturridge, and other family members.

Sturridge joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2009 but failed to really cement down a regular spot. He then moved on to join Liverpool in 2013.

Currently on the lookout for a new club, the former England international will be keen to put this ordeal behind him and focus on pre-season preparations.
