CONFIRMED: Another loanee departs to make Championship return

Matt Miazga has joined Reading on loan, as confirmed by the Berkshire club’s official website.

The USA international had a mixed spell at Nantes last season, eventually leading to a switch to the Royals. Things clearly worked out a lot better there, and after a successful 6 months, he’s returned for the season to come.

After arriving at Chelsea in January 2016 as as 19 year old, Miazga was shipped out to Vitesse, where he made a good start to life in European football over two seasons there.

His step up to Ligue 1 didn’t go so well, but he seems settled with Reading, and we hope to see him continue the progress he made as a regular starter for them last season.

He never looked like he’s really got the potential to break into our first team, or play at a Champions League level, but as long as he continues to do well in the second tier and for his country he will continue improving his value, and hopefully generate decent cash in a sale in a few years.

It’s a cruel way of looking at things, but as Chelsea fans we’ve got to be realistic about these things sometimes.
