Why Chelsea fans are excited for a simple July friendly

We’ve come round to the first preseason friendly of the year again, with a new manager and new players – as seems to be the case every year.

If you’re a fan of a lower league team you might just end up watching your same old coach put out the same old players (plus a few trialists) to batter a local side 14-0. It’s a bit different for Chelsea fans.

Even with a transfer ban, there’s so much excitement about tomorrow’s game against Bohemians. There is a legendary player returning as coach, thrilling academy talents set to get a chance, and loan players fresh back from success elsewhere ready to show us what they can do.

Of course there will be the typical slew of substitutions in the second half, and likely the slow and disjointed performance you’d expect in July. But it’s the start of an exciting journey, and we can’t wait.
