Chelsea ‘considering’ loaning Italy international to make room for academy star

Chelsea are “considering” sending Davide Zappacosta out on loan, in order to make a first team spot for youngster Reece James, according to The Evening Standard.

The report states that Chelsea were initially looking to use Ola Aina as backup to Cesar Azpilicueta, and allowing Zappacosta to go on loan, and James to get more development experience out on loan.

However, Aina then joined Torino on a permanent deal, and the Blues now look set to offer James the chance in the first team squad.

Zappacosta has had interest from Serie A, and was even allowed to talk to Lazio in January over a permanent move that didn’t transpire.

The Italy international has been used by Frank Lampard during pre-season, but it would appear that when James returns from his ankle injury, he will be the one given the chance to compete with Azpilicueta.

James also has the ability to play as a centre back and a centre midfielder, but is arguably most effective as a full back.
