The proof that Roman Abramovich has not given up on his Chelsea project

If you had feared that Roman Abramovich was distancing himself from Chelsea, the news that Duncan Castles has reported today ought to provide some reassurance.

It’s been a rollercoaster ride for Abramovich over the past year or so.

The BBC reported in June of last year that the Russian oligarch had withdrawn his application for a UK visa. His application hadn’t been rejected – he withdrew it himself.

With Chelsea’s plans for the redevelopment of Stamford Bridge subsequently being put on hold, we all wondered if the Roman empire could be collapsing in on itself.

While Abramovich was not spotted at a competitive Chelsea game until the Europa League final last season, he still appears to be willing to take a hands-on approach.

With Duncan Castles claiming that he himself rang Frank Lampard in an attempt to fast forward negotiations, the idea that Abramovich is no longer interested looks to be rubbish.

Abramovich must still be very much interested in Chelsea and excited by the prospect of a former player of his returning as manager – else why would he pick up the phone?

Sleep easy, Chelsea fans. Roman’s going nowhere.
