Spanish sources insist Kovacic’s permanent Chelsea move will be completed

Mateo Kovacic is set to become a Chelsea player permanently.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo in Spain, who are claiming that the deal to take the Croatian midfielder from Madrid to London is all but done, and just waiting for the final details to be completed, well in advance of the deadline at the end of the month.

That is when his loan contract runs out at Chelsea, and when the team must sign him by to avoid the transfer ban that is in place.

Madrid are having a proper clearout of their squad this summer, and Kovacic is going to be one of many players sold to raise funds for the big money moves they’re making. Zinedine Zidane won’t object, the site claims, as he only fancied the former Inter man as a rotation option anyway.

It will probably mean loans for Chelsea players too. Tiemoue Bakayoko, Mason Mount, Ethan Ampadu and Danny Drinkwater are all competing for a couple of places now.
