Relief for many Chelsea fans as flop striker pushes for exit from the club

Gonzalo Higuain was brought in by Maurizio Sarri as what felt like a bit of a last roll of the dice in January.

The forward was struggling for AC Milan, while Chelsea couldn’t buy a goal from their incumbent pair of strikers for love nor money.

It was thought that with his understanding of Maurizio Sarri’s system, he would be able to drop straight into the team and get scoring. It didn’t work out that way.

Despite a brace early on in his time at the club, Higuain never found form, despite being given a plethora of chances by Sarri. By the time it got to the end of the season, the Argentine had lost his place in the team to Olivier Giroud.

Given the transfer ban we’re likely to face this season, it had been feared we might try to keep him on at the club. But comments in the Metro from his agent make it very clear that’s not going to happen.

“Gonzalo wants to respect his contract,” his agent said, “and therefore stay at Juventus for another two years.”

Is it just us, or does that sound like a threat?
