Chelsea’s homegrown predicament means one foreign player will have to go

There are a lot of questions for the new Chelsea manager to answer this summer, but one of the ones that isn’t being talked about enough right now is the home grown issue in the squad.

Matt Law’s piece in the Telegraph today explains that the Blues will have 18 foreign players on their books once the loanees return, and someone will have to make room.

Even that is assuming the squad is packed with young players to make up the numbers of homegrown pros.

Ethan Ampadu’s non-B list status may mean the club are more inclined to send him on loan. Michy Batshuayi may be part of the first team squad next season, but if not will likely be loaned or sold to make space.

Kurt Zouma looks too good an option for us to ignore at centre back, while Tiemoue Bakayoko’s future really could go either way.

Importantly, whichever of the foreign players ends up missing out, the young academy products will have more opportunities than ever in this squad as the senior English pros run out.
