Chelsea’s decision to extend Willian contract is a “no-brainer”

It has been reported in the last 12 hours that Willian is set to sign a 2 year contract extension at Chelsea.

That will really divide a lot of Chelsea fans, with plenty seeing his upside and others totally sick of his inconsistency.

Whatever you think about the Brazilian, you can really question the decision to resign him. The club are banned from making transfers until next summer, and so there’s no way we can sell him. We’re already going to be short of attacking quality with Eden Hazard leaving.

Willian’s deal expires next summer, so he will be able to walk away for free, and sign a pre-contract for a new team from January onwards. We know he’s going to be in the team this season, so he will retain plenty of value even as he passes beyond 30.

So even if we intend to sell him next summer, the cost of one year’s extra wages is well worth the ability to sell him for significantly more next summer, rather than lose him. Add to that the fact that we need him to play and therefore can’t sell him, and you have what’s called a “no brainer”.
