Chelsea favourite set to leave club despite offer on the table

Gianfranco Zola is set to leave Chelsea this summer after rejecting a new role at the club, hoping to return to full time management.

The Italian coach has clearly had enough of being a number two, and has decided that he wants another shot at running a club, according to the Guardian.

They have quotes from his agent Fulvio Marrucco, who makes it very clear what the former Blue’s wishes are:

“Gianfranco’s contract with Chelsea expires at the end of the month. After a season of hard work and fantastic results alongside Maurizio Sarri, he is ready to take the next step in his own management career.”

That doesn’t leave much ambiguity then. To be fair, his role was always uncertain after Sarri left. Zola had been working with him as an assistant, and despite always having some kind of role available to him, the expected return of Frank Lampard with Jody Morris and staff of his own will clearly make Zola a bit of an outsider.

There was an offer on the table for him, but it seems it wasn’t the role he wanted. As always, we wish the little magician well, and hope he will be back soon.
