£35m bids for Brazilian will worsen contract stalemate

It was thought that Willian’s contract was all but signed, but according to breaking reports in the Evening Standard, bids for the winger from Europe have disrupted things.

They say that the winger, who turns 31 later this summer and can leave on a free transfer next summer, is not close to signing a new deal with a the club and ending that foreign interest.

Chelsea are still insisting that they only want to give Willian a one year deal. He is holding out for two, in line with what his compatriot David Luiz got a few weeks ago.

Luiz was in a stronger position, however, because his contract was about to expire, and he could force the club into doing what he wanted once the the transfer ban was in place.

We will see what happens with this Willian deal, but it seems likely we will give in eventually to avoid potentially losing him for free in a year.
