The surprise Chelsea player named alongside Eden Hazard in BBC team of the year

Both Antonio Rudiger and Eden Hazard have been named in Garth Crooks’ team of the year.

The BBC pundit names a weekly team, and has now collated them all together into a team of the whole season, which you can see here.

Eden Hazard was a pretty obvious choice, given he picked up 16 goals and 15 assists in a really impressive season.

But Antonio Rudiger is slightly more of a surprise. The German defender had some good games and some not so good games, and overall put together a really solid season. But was he the second best centre back in the country after Virgi Van Dijk? We’re not so sure.

Still, it’s a good sign that he’s made it in there, and we hope he can keep it up for years to come. He’s now clearly our first choice defender, and he really established that over the course of 38 games this year.

Certainly as long as Maurizio Sarri sticks around, he will favour the former Roma man, and with our other options in that position either too old or fairly inexperienced, the spot should be Rudi’s to lose next season, even if we were to change manager.
