CONFIRMED: Olivier Giroud signs new Chelsea contract

Olivier Giroud has signed a new Chelsea contract, BBC Sport have reported.

The France striker joined last January on an 18 month deal and so was set to leave the club this summer.

However with a potential transfer ban on the cards, he’s clearly been persuaded that plenty of minutes will still be available, and that a 32 year old can still play a vital role in this team. Of course the word yesterday was that it is just an optional extension by the club – so Giroud had no say in it.

While his total record for the club is just 17 goals in 62 appearances, a lot of those have been as a sub, since he’s spent 18 months backing up Alvaro Morata and then Gonzalo Higuain.

As a starter in this season’s Europa League he’s done much better, with 10 goals in 13 and 3 assists – albeit against some pretty shoddy opposition.

He will be hoping now to face his old club Arsenal in the final of the Europa League, and given his contributions to getting us there, it seems only fair that he gets the chance to start.
