Chelsea’s second highest rated player of the season surprises everyone who watched their games

Eden Hazard was Chelsea’s best player this season. You can measure the season in any way you like, with any methodology, and the Belgian will shake out on top.

But according to WhoScored’s algorithm, which judges players and gives them an average score per game based on their stats, the second best player of our Premier League was someone you really wouldn’t expect.

While Hazard ended the season with an average rating of 7.81, Marcos Alonso came in second with 7.18.

Now that really is surprising. Alonso had a couple of decent games, but for large parts of the season looked totally devoid of confidence. Most Chelsea fans would put him among their worst performers of the season, let alone one of the top ones.

That’s the problem with judging things on statistics isn’t it. You can’t judge everything on passes completed and duels won, sometimes you have to watch a player with your naked eye to see how they’re getting on.

We hope Marcos can bounce back and re-find some form next season – maybe this little nugget will boost his confidence?
