Chelsea’s player with the most through balls this season may surprise you

Chelsea were criticised for a lot of sideways passing this season, but looking at the stats reveals some interesting facts about who plays the most attacking passes.

Glancing down WhoScored‘s list of stats for this Premier League season, one man stands out at the top of the list. Nobody should be surprised, even though he’s no longer at the club. In his one start and 5 sub appearances this season, Cesc Fabregas managed 0.5 through balls per game.

Next up, the top of the real regulars, with 0.4 per game, is Jorginho. That means the midfielder, often criticised this season for his lack of forward momentum in playing attacking passes. As it turns out, he’s the player in the first team who plays the most defence splitting passes.

Now you can still say he needs to be more progressive in his play – one through ball every two games is hardly Ronaldinho style – but it’s interesting food for thought, and maybe for some debates this summer.
