Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri had his usual prematch press conference today, but there was more than just a bit of team news to get through.
Then there was the N’Golo Kante injury questions (he may be back for the final).
After all that, the talk came to Sarri himself and his future. Plenty of rumours this week have linked him with a move to Roma, so it was no surprise to see him asked about it:
Sarri on Roma's interest in him: "I like to stay here. If I can, I like to stay here."
Then asked, if only Chelsea could sack him to send him to Roma
"Or… I could try with another English club." #CFC #CHEFRA #UEL— Nizaar Kinsella (@NizaarKinsella) May 8, 2019
He’s set his stall out then. There was no way he was going to say anything else, despite the situation at Chelsea. His best case scenario is success at the club, but failing that, getting sacked would mean a serious windfall.
So don’t expect him to go around saying he wants out – as Antonio Conte is showing, there’s a lot of money to be made by getting sacked the right way.
The joke about moving to another English team? It just shows he knows he’s in a perilous position, no matter the result tomorrow night.
