Rudiger faces race for fitness ahead of key Champions League game

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger’s injury picked up against Liverpool isn’t as bad as first feared, but will still keep the German out for at least a week.

The Evening Standard say that he will be struggling to come back in time for the vital game in the top 4 race.

Maurizio Sarri can count on his backups against Slavia Prague tonight, and maybe against Burnley on Monday night. But when the team heads to Manchester United next Sunday they need their first choice defender back.

He hasn’t had a really consistent season, but on his day he’s very good, and probably would be Sarri’s top pick of all the centre-backs. Against Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, his speed will be vital, and he’s a key part of our attack and defence in the air too.

Often it’s his well angled defensive headers that free Jorginho to pick up the ball away from his marker. And at corners in attack he’s a really menace.

So whatever you think of the defender’s long term potential, just hope that he’s fit for this one.
