Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri makes bizarre claim about his debut campaign

Maurizio Sarri’s debut campaign as Chelsea manager has proven to be a difficult one, but the Italian insists that it’s been a success.

When Sarri arrived at Stamford Bridge, he came with promise of revolutionising our style of play. He’s a disciple of Johan Cruyff, not Jose Mourinho.

Few would have expected just how long a process it has proven to implement his philosophy. The results are inconsistent – and the performances hardly entertaining.

That’s largely down to Sarri not having the players at his disposal that he desires, but you could argue that he could’ve made better use of what he’s got.

Regardless, Sarri is insistent that this season has been a good one, and believes that’ll still be the case even if we fail to qualify for the Champions League.

He’s quoted by the Guardian saying:

“No. No, we played a final, which we lost on penalties. We are in the semi-final in the Europa League. We are fighting for the top four. So the season, at the moment, is good.”

Is this really how low our standards have fallen? Speaking as though losing on penalties in a final is some kind of achievement. It absolutely isn’t.

This season will be failure if we don’t succeed in getting back into the Champions League. It really is that simple.

If Sarri is unable to realise that, perhaps he’s not the right man for us…
