Chelsea’s forgotten leader to return to match day squad after injury to regular starter

Gary Cahill is one of the least favored players at Stamford Bridge at the moment and that evident from Maurizio Sarri’s choice of selection each match day.

The Italian manager has preferred the David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger combination in the middle of his four-man defense. Andreas Christensen has settled for a regular place on the bench alongside a full-back option as the defensive cover Sarri likes to rely on.

That has pushed Cahill further back in the pecking order, failing to make the teams for matchday selections. But could change temporarily with Antonio Rudiger set to be on the sidelines for the next few weeks after picking up a knee injury against Liverpool.

Cahill will be on the bench, most likely, with Luiz and Christensen lucidly getting the nod to start against Slavia Prague on Thursday in the quarter-final of the Europa League.

Chelsea already lead the Czech Republic side ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
