Chelsea striker explains why Sarri’s formation doesn’t suit him

The Daily Mail wrote up yesterday’s press conference with Olivier Giroud, and they note that the French striker has spoken about the system Maurizio Sarri plays and how it might affect his scoring:

“‘We could be more dangerous with crosses, running behind,” the former Arsenal forward said.

“When you are not scoring enough goals, you point at the striker, but it’s more like having to improve in an offensive formation,” he went on, hardly shrinking from saying that it’s the system that at fault.

It’s true that it doesn’t have the kind of wing play that Antonio Conte’s side relied on, which created plenty of chances for Diego Costa and Michy Batshuayi, and later Alvaro Morata, to attack balls from the wing backs.

Now we play narrower, and look to attack  with Eden Hazard coming in tight to link up with him. We know Hazard likes that. Giroud may have to just suck it up. We’ll see how he gets on in a juicy looking home tie with Slavia Prague tonight.
