Chelsea ruing failure to secure £40m target before his big move

Richarlison handed Chelsea a huge step towards success in their race for the top four when he banged in a bicycle kick for Everton against Manchester United yesterday.

The Brazilian has been great at Everton this term, after a breakout season with Watford last year.

Before he joined the Hornets he was linked with Chelsea, and those links have continued even now he’s moved to Merseyside.

We may not sign anyone this summer, and the problem with Richarlison is that he will not cost a bomb as we’re buying from Everton, not Fluminense. The Toffees will want way more than the £40m they paid just last summer.

But if we can summon the funds, he looks like a great option. He has that tough, hard working Brazilian side to him like Diego Costa, but with a bit more class and technique. And hopefully a bit less of a wild streak too.

It would really have been perfect to sign him that summer of 2017, when Costa left, for a much smaller fee, direct from Brazil. Who knows how Conte’s second season would have gone.

I guess we’ll never know.
