Why Chelsea are relieved that their attempts to sign West Ham grafter didn’t come off

It’s easy to forget now, given how many players they’re linked to in every window, but it was just two years ago that Chelsea were being linked with Michail Antonio.

The West Ham attacker, who can play out wide or up front, has pace, strength and a great directness. He’s not a subtle player by any means, but his work rate and physical gifts make him a dangerous player – as we saw with his goal against Tottenham at the weekend.

Frankly the former Nottingham Forest man was never going to have the finesse necessary to play at a top club like Chelsea (just think how frustrated the fans get with Brazil regular Willian…) but on night’s like Saturday he contributed more than he likely ever would as a bench warmer or sub for a season.

The Englishman’s goal condemned Spurs to their first loss at their new stadium, and meant Chelsea have a perfect chance to close the gap on their London rivals today against Manchester United.

To be honest, we could have see Antonio as a success under his namesake Mr Conte, who was the manager when he were linked. But the reality is that he would never have survived under Maurizio Sarri’s regime, and i’s better for everyone that he stuck around in East London to take points off our rivals.
