Chelsea play their part in Premier League teams reasserting European dominance

Chelsea have played their part in English teams achieving something which hasn’t been managed for 35 years.

It’s been a concern for all English football fans over the past five or six years. The dominance we once had in Europe has faded.

There were times where Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool would all be competing in the Champions League knockout rounds – but that trend swiftly ended.

Liverpool reached last season’s Champions League final, but were rolled over by Real Madrid. There was never much of a possibility of them actually winning it.

Things are different this year, though…

Both Liverpool and Tottenham are in the competition’s semi-finals, with Barcelona and Ajax standing between them and the final in Madrid.

In the Europa League, Chelsea and Arsenal are both two wins away from facing each other in the final, with a Champions League spot on the line.

There’s heavy English representation at both levels of competition – and we haven’t seen four at this stage of the campaign for 35 years.

You do get the feeling that English sides are strong enough to compete once again. Only time will tell if both competitions will have a Premier League winner.
