Chelsea midfielder begins talks with Russian top club ahead of possible summer move

Mateo Kovacic has begun talks to join Zenit St. Petersburg next summer as he keeps up with his push to not return to Real Madrid.

Chelsea are considered favorites to sign the Croatia international but their restriction from signing new players means the London giants cannot complete the deal to bring him in. Maurizio Sarri is said to rate him very highly, but there are opposing views within the club.

Some say his lack of goals in his maiden season in the Premier League, means he cannot be trusted to support the attack line and the Blues must focus on other targets if they want to bring in new players. The Daily Mail says the 24-year old’s representatives have entered into discussions with Russian giants, St. Petersburg and are willing to force a move from the Santiago Bernabeu.

He has played 43 times for Chelsea this season alongside N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, mostly in a three-man midfield.
