“I thought he was joking” – How Callum Hudson-Odoi reacted to England call-up

Great news seems too good to be true sometimes, and the reactions differ from person to person all over the world. For some they will scream for joy, others will nudge themselves to ascertain the reality of the happenings while some will doubt until the news truly manifests.

Chelsea youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi was called up to the England setup for the very first time and he reveals upon hearing the news that he thought ‘the manager was joking’. He placidly took in every moment shortly after reporting to the England U-21 squad in Bristol before rolling off to join the seniors in Gareth Southgate’s camp.

On Twitter, Hudson-Odoi says he’s buzzing.

It’s been a massive year for the 18-year old. Firstly being drafted into Chelsea’s first-team before attracting European giants Bayern Munich. He’s had fans call for him to start ahead of experienced duo Willian and Pedro and has now jumped from the U-17 through the U-21 to the Three Lions in a space of three days.

The glorious week is too sweet to savor for Hudson-Odoi, who initially thought the call-up was a joke but is now relishing his prospects.

“It’s been a crazy day but getting my first (senior) international call-up is an amazing feelin. Today has been a very long day for me because I had to travel to Bristol first for the U21s and then getting told that I have to come over here to St. George’s Park, it’s been a crazy experience but I’m delighted to get the call and it’s a nice feeling to be here as well.

I thought the manager (Aidy Boothroyd) was joking! I was shocked and then when I heard that I actually had to go over, I couldn’t believe it. I was delighted. It’s a dream come true. Now I’ve got to work hard, enjoy every moment and keep working to just hopefully make an impact when I get the opportunity.”
