“He is a very important player” – Sarri praises unlikely Europa League star

Maurizio Sarri has made it to the Europa League quarter final, and if there’s one man he should be thanking it’s Olivier Giroud.

The Frenchman banged in a hattrick last night, and it is pretty much his goals alone that have carried Chelsea through this competition so far.

Of course, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Willian have also played their part, but it’s been unquestionably Giroud’s competition.

He arrived at the club in order to break free from his time as an eternal second choice at Arsenal, and while he’s ended up doing much the same thing for us, he’s at least dominated the world’s ultimate “second choice” competition, the Europa League.

Sarri comments remind everyone that the Frenchman isn’t just a guy who you can bring on late in the game when you’re losing. He showed his quality in front of goal tonight, and we all know about his linkup play.

So if we do go on and win this competition, let’s not forget the man who did so much to get us to the final.
