Chelsea’s transfer ban could mean new contracts for unpopular stars

It has today been confirmed that Chelsea will face a two window transfer ban, and that’s causing understandable panic in the club’s fanbase.

But there’s more to think about than just not being able to sign players.

The knock-on effects of that could mean for some serious changes in squad planning. One of the least popular would be possible new contracts for stars who the club suddenly realise they can’t afford to lose anymore.

Players like Willian, who the club may have been thinking about shipping out as they pass 30, may get a new deal, or just kept around longer than anticipated if the club realises they can’t replace them.

So anyone hoping to see a clearout of the players who have been struggling for Maurizio Sarri this season will be disappointed. Instead, we could even see some new deals for players who were otherwise set to leave.

The upside is that Eden Hazard may now be told to stay an extra year, if we’re not going to be able to replace him.
