The one piece of terrible news that means Chelsea must sign players this month

The Sun yesterday reported the devastating news that Ruben Loftus-Cheek could be out for the rest of the season if he has back surgery. That’s a real blow for Ruben, who was finally making his way in the first team.

The added problem is that Ruben was actually covering in two positions. The reasons he was finally getting the minutes he deserved was that he was playing both as a backup right winger and in his natural position as a central midfielder in our second string.

That doubled his opportunities, and it was really paying off. He had had more minutes in the last couple of months than in his Chelsea career thus far.

So the news that he’s out now means we’re dangerously thin in both of those spots, and if it’s true that he’s going to be out for the rest of the season, it will almost certainly accelerate any plans we had to bring players in.
