“One of the most important performances” – Maurizio Sarri calls Chelsea’s defeat to Tottenham a good one

Chelsea’s defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup last Tuesday was the most important performance by Maurizio Sarri’s team this season, according to the Italian head coach.

The Blues lost embarrassingly to Spurs in the Premier League encounter last month and hoped to better the result against their bitter London rivals. The scoreline was bettered with the 1-0 defeat but the outcome remains that Chelsea still linger behind Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Overall the display by the Chelsea team was impressive considering the numbers in possession and in the shots column of the match statistics. The attitude and mentality of the players was a positive one but what was missing the entire game was the final product as the Chelsea attack lacked the cutting edge to score a goal against their semi final opponents.

Sarri is adamant his players produced the most important performance since he was announced head coach of the Blues last summer.

“We played about 70 balls in the opposing box against 11 balls from Tottenham in our box, 18 shots against 7. Five goal opportunities against two, so we deserved more.

I am really disappointed with the result but I am happy with the performance. In my opinion this one is one of the most important performances of my team in the season.”
