Maurizio Sarri confirms 18-year old – not a new signing – will replace Gary Cahill if he leaves this month

Ethan Ampadu will be Gary Cahill’s replacement in the Chelsea squad if the club captain leaves this month, according to head coach Maurizio Sarri.

The Italian tactician has identified the youngster as heir to Cahill in the Chelsea team and has promised more minutes for the Wales international.

Cahill is expected to leave Stamford Bridge and end his six-year stay with the current FA Cup champions after falling down in the pecking order under two successive coaches. After losing his place under Antonio Conte in the last few weeks to the end of the season, the situation remains unchanged under Sarri. He will not oust Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz from their starting berths this season and has Andreas Christensen to fend off when an emergency cover is needed.

Recent reports have linked him with a move to several clubs in Europe but none has materialized yet. The Guardian says he may be on his way to AC Milan, Metro Sport reported he is wanted by Arsenal while Daily Mail believes Claudio Ranieri is determined to sign the former Bolton Wanderers defender.

Sarri all but confirmed the player will leave the club and was clear on who replaces him as well.
