Mateo Kovacic can replace Jorginho because he has this quality

Mateo Kovacic played in central midfield against Sheffield Wednesday, and while he wasn’t playing in Jorginho’s role, he did show the skills he would need to play in that position.

Ethan Ampadu was playing as the deepest midfielder in that game, and he showed his capable tackling and passing ability, but he wasn’t ever really facing forward and advancing, more just moving the ball.

Kovacic in the more advanced midfield role, took 140 touches, far more than anyone else in the game. That ability to dictate the tempo of the game is what Jorginho has, and what any player who plays in that role in a Maurizio Sarri team needs to have.

The Croatian has it, and Ampadu can learn it. Do we really need to sign another midfielder? Cesc Fabregas needs replacing long term, but can’t we let Mason Mount take over next season?

We’ll have to see what the club does, but with just a couple of days of the window left, it looks like we’re not making any more moves.
