Major Spanish paper reports Chelsea close to completing deal for first January signing

We are at that time of the year when transfer stories go in circles, and Chelsea’s chase of a new striker now takes us back for another merry-go-round of rumors.

Chelsea are reportedly closing in on the signing of Juventus’ striker, on loan at AC Milan, Gonzalo Higuain. Only a few days ago, Calciomercato reported the Argentina international was not interested in moving to Stamford Bridge as he wanted to finish his loan term with the Rosonerri ,but now Marca, a credible newspaper in Spain, says the former Real Madrid forward is hours away from joining Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Phew. That’s quite a mouthful.

Having worked together at Napoli in the past, Maurizio Sarri and Higuain would relish a reunion. The English FA Cup holders have resumed negotiations with Juventus over the deal and want to make him their striker signing this month.

The 31-year-old would replace Alvaro Morata if the 25-year old seals his return to Spain to join Sevilla.

But the fees being bandied around in these rumours are huge, and it’s incredibly difficult to see Chelsea paying an actual fee for him.

Still, stranger things have happened…
