Gary Neville has spoken out in favour of Maurizio Sarri’s big gamble this week.
Sarri spoke to the media after the loss to Arsenal, and made a surprising and frank declaration to the media about his squad. He said he had problems motivating them and that they were “difficult”.
That is indeed a big move for a recently arrived manager to make, especially one without any trophies to his name. But it is perhaps significant that he feels he needs to do that.
Neville, in quotes on Sky Sports taken from his podcast, says he admires the courage of the move, and that he’s seen plenty of evidence of what the Chelsea dressing room is like before.
He’s perhaps the only major pundit who has come out with that view. The collected wisdom on BT Sports showing the interview were all saying that they weren’t fans, that’s for sure.
We’ll have to see whether this bold move pays off.
