This week we’ve seen increasing links between Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata and two top teams in Spain – Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
But why is a player who most Chelsea fans would drive to the airport themselves gaining interest from top clubs? We explain all here:
Firstly, we’re not even sure this interest is real. It could all be leaked by his agents or by Chelsea to drum up interest.
At Madrid might find a way to finance the cost of Morata if both player and Chelsea reduce their expectations. Loan deal, including wages and payment to London club, cost €9m, Atletico would pay less. Chelsea would like a replacement and even an obligation to buy in the summer pic.twitter.com/uvPu4rfoZt

Secondly, you have to bear in mind that while we’ve all seen his struggles face to face on the pitch, to a casual outsider in Spain not watching his internal strife, he’s actually scored a reasonable amount of goals over two seasons.
Thirdly, there’s clearly a belief – even among Chelsea fans – that his problems are 99% mental. A return to his home country, where he’s scored goals before, could change everything, and the top dogs at Barca and Atleti are clearly ready to take that risk.
So don’t just think that these two big clubs don’t know what they’re doing – they do. They don’t think they’re getting a top player, they just think they might be getting a bargain who could quite easily return to being good again in a different environment – and they may be right.
