Chelsea among clubs “surprised” by attacking star’s backward progress

Chelsea have been linked with Leon Bailey for a very long time now, all the way back to when he was in Belgium in fact.

He made the move to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, and appeared to have made his breakout proper last season.

This term he’s been back on the bench fairly often though, as Leverkusen struggled, and their manager was sacked just before Christmas – in part because of his failure to get the best out of the flying winger.

SportWitness have quotes from Bailey’s stepfather, where he discusses the change, and seems positive that the new boss will play his boy more often.

He also discloses the interest of major clubs including Chelsea, who he says were “surprised” to see the talent coming off the bench so often.

Certainly a move looks less certain than it did a year ago – but maybe we just dodged a bullet on this one? If he returns to the team and excels, we will be back for him this summer for sure.
