“There’s no need” – Antonio Rudiger explains why Chelsea haven’t begun new contract talks

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has been one of the stars of the season so far.

The defender had spells in and out of the team under Antonio Conte, but from the moment Sarri got his hands on the defender he’s clearly identified him as a player he can build around.

The German has started every Premier League game, and is now the top centre back at the club. It’s quite the rise from his arrival 18 months ago.

Despite recently tying down players like Cesar Azpilicueta and N’Golo Kante to new deals, the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge still haven’t got round to Toni yet. When asked about it in quotes carried on Sky Sports yesterday, Rudiger was very straightforward about why he thought there was nothing on the table:

“There’s no need, because I still have three-and-a-half years to go,” he replied when asked whether he was discussing a new deal.

“There’s no speaking between me and the club. It’s also not necessary at the moment either with three-and-a-half years to go.”

Quite right too. He only signed 18 months ago, and with such a long time on his deal it would be madness for us to be looking to give him a wage bump already.

Both parties know that if his form carries on in the same vein, in a years time he can expect an even more considerable hike in his salary.
