“I still haven’t played with the full, full first team one game” – Chelsea star unhappy with backup role

Cesc Fabregas is a competitor. We’ve known that since the day we saw him dropped into action as a teenager against Patrick Viera in midfield.

He’s lost his place under several Chelsea managers and always battled back to win it again, and this season he’s doing his best to do the same.

He’s made himself invaluable as Jorginho’s backup, but he’s starting to realise he’s never going to displace the Italian as Maurizio Sarri’s golden boy, and there’s never really going to be the tactical opportunity for them both to start together, unless Sarri changes formation entirely.

Even regular starts for the B team aren’t enough to keep him happy, as you can tell from his quotes carried by Football.London today:

“I know what my role is. Unfortunately it’s not the one I want,” he replied when asked about how he felt as a backup.

“I’m keeping it professional as usual. I’m always trying to do my best, in the conditions, playing with the youngsters, playing with the first team, even though this year I still haven’t played with the full, full first team one game.”

It’s easy to understand his frustration. Playing with the B team in far flung European locations is hardly what he signed up for. No surprise then that he’s been linked with moves to AC Milan, among other clubs.
