How Maurizio Sarri’s tactical switch could affect Chelsea’s potential £30m January spending

The latest reports, featured in places like Eurosport here, claim that a forward is what Maurizio Sarri wants, with Callum Wilson for £30m the latest hot name.

That makes total sense, given neither of our strikers look like they’ll be up to it long term.

But could this switch to a false 9 formation change everything? If we persist with it week to week we have no need for a new striker – Olivier Giroud is a perfect plan b off the bench. However it would mean a real need for another wide attacker. In Pedro, Eden Hazard and Willian we have three of them, but when they’re all on the pitch together, we have nobody on the bench.

That means when they are subbed off, we have to bring on either Ruben Loftus-Cheek out of position, or Callum Hudson-Odoi, who Sarri clearly doesn’t think is ready.

If we’re playing this long term, this squad will need to be rebalanced – possibly as soon as this January.
