When was the last time Chelsea scored two direct free kicks in a game?

Chelsea’s game against MOL Vidi was a bit of a weird one.

We scored twice, with two free kicks, and conceded an own goal and a wondergoal.

In the end, the game was a fun 2-2 draw with the spirited Hungarians. But when was the last time we scored two direct free kicks in a game?

You have to go back almost ten years, to 2009, when Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack both netted against Ipswich in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge. That was under Luiz Felipe Scolari, who didn’t last much longer despite the two superb efforts from his midfielders.

In fact, no top flight English team has managed it since January 2016 according to the Official Chelsea Website, when West Ham netted two against Bournemouth.

It was a different world back then of course – Arsenal were top of the league, and Chelsea were in 14th – points behind the Hammers and just 5 points away from the relegation zone.
