How Jorginho’s mum persuaded him to pick Chelsea over Man City

The transfer of Jorginho to Man City was one of the more interested stories of the summer. It’s clear that they wanted him, and it’s not often you see a player turn down the behemoth in the North West.

But Jorginho was able to, and he decided to come to Chelsea instead. The idea of staying with Maurizio Sarri as he too made the move was clearly a factor, but an interview with the midfielder in the Telegraph reveals his mother had quite a large influence on him too:

“He really wanted to play for Pep Guardiola,” she is quoted as saying. “He asked me: ‘As a player, Mum, which one would you pick: Chelsea or City?’ I said Chelsea because of the greatness and stronger tradition.”

Clearly she’s a woman who knows her football. She was even famously filmed crying in the Chelsea megastore in the summer when she saw shirts with her son’s name on them.

The “greatness” that she speaks of may well have persuaded the Italy international to come to here in the summer, but it won’t last long if we keep losing to City in big games like the one tomorrow.

Jorginho was rested in midweek, and he desperately needs to come back into the team and show everyone if he really believes in fighting for the “stronger tradition” of Chelsea.
