Former Liverpool defender declares the end of this player’s Chelsea future

Jamie Carragher has declared the end of Alvaro Morata’s time at Chelsea.

The former Liverpool defender said in comments on Sky Sports quoted by Squawka that the forward is just never going to reach the level required of him:

“He is 26 and his career statistics tell you that he had not played many full seasons – 34 appearances in Serie A for Juventus in 2015-2016 is his highest league total. Chelsea cannot wait,” Carragher said.

“With a first-rate striker this would be a team capable of challenging City. All Chelsea’s title-winning sides have had great strikers – Drogba or Diego Costa – and this team needs one desperately,” he went on.

To be honest, it’s the conclusion that most Chelsea fans have drawn at this stage. Despite a bright start and a couple of flashes since, the Spaniard has never convinced over a long period and already looks like one of the bigger wastes of money in recent history.

The £50+m we paid for a player who was coming on to score against minnows for Real Madrid looks quite absurd now.

He was left out of the squad entirely for yesterday’s game against Man City, with Maurizio Sarri preferring to play a false nine than either Morata or Olivier Giroud who at least made the bench.

The Italian will likely return to using a striker in future games, but the door is looking more and more closed for Alvaro.
