Chelsea should not waste €45m on Napoli defender when youth talent looks ready to step up

Chelsea have been linked with Napoli’s Elseid Hysaj in recent days, as the January transfer gets closer.

That seems like a smart move, as Davide Zappacosta is hardly pulling up many trees as Cesar Azpilicueta’s backup.

But could there be a superior option right under our noses?

Reece James has bust forth from the youth academy and has won THREE consecutive player of the month awards on loan at Wigan.

He’s still only 18, so he could easily spend next season backing up Azpi. The 10 or so starts that Zappacosta will pick up this season would be much better spent on developing home grown talent.

Not only would we save the reported €45m on buying Hysaj, we would also be able to sell on Zappacosta.

Let’s hope Maurizio Sarri is watching some Wigan games this season, and not just his beloved Napoli. He could save the club some big money – and make himself very popular with fans in the process.
