Why Alvaro Morata wasn’t on the bench against Man City

It’s never a good sign when a manager has to assure the media that a player still has a future with a club.

In fact, it’s almost always a sign that the player probably will be moved on, sooner rather than later.

Goal.com have the report, which says that Sarri said the following about Morata after leaving him out of the squad for the Manchester City game entirely:

“I don’t know if in Brighton we will play in the same way or not, maybe not. I don’t know. I think Alvaro is able to understand that it is only a tactical decision, it is not the final choice.”

It does make sense that, playing a false 9 you wouldn’t put two strikers on the bench. Seeing as Olivier Giroud is clearly ahead of Morata in the pecking order, it makes sense that it was he and not the Spaniard among the subs.

That doesn’t mean Morata’s time at Chelsea is over though. A sale in the summer looks very likely, but before then we need him – for Europa League games at the very least.
