The most important department in Chelsea’s richly assembled squad that needs reinforcement

Alvaro Morata actually had the ball at the back of the net in Sunday’s stalemate with Everton at Stamford Bridge, but it was chalked off even before the celebrations begun and in the end, the Blues technical handlers might have secretly wished they had a different kind of forward leading their attack.

After a drab first half with very little threat going forward, Chelsea threw everything at Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the second, failing at every attempt.

Long shots, crosses, headers and even the tricky final ball from the by-line were all handled well by the Toffees defenders. Guilty of missing chances chiefly was Morata who had a few half chances he could have buried or at least given more headache to the opposition defense. But he hit fresh air in some and mishit others. There were other instances where the former Real Madrid striker simply failed to coerce his way between the Everton backline, instead of going for the odd attempt to mislead the referee into giving a penalty.

If Chelsea had a striker as bullish as Diego Costa or Didier Drogba upfront on Sunday, it would have been a different scoreline to report on.
